What is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day is a global event that commemorates the women’s rights movement and brings attention to issues such as sexism and discrimination against women.
The origins of the observance date back to February 28, 1909 in New York City when the Socialist Party of America organized a ‘National Woman’s Day’ to bring attention to gender equality issues in the United States.
At the 1910 International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, March 8 was suggested as an international day to bring attention to women’s rights. The day was soon embraced by socialists throughout the world and recognized by many communist countries, including the Soviet Union in 1917.
The day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1975 and has since been embraced by many countries around the world as a way to both honor the women’s rights movement and call attention to the current inequalities that women face throughout the world.
When is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day is held annually on March 8.
Although the Hollywood pay gap between male and female actors has been the subject of much well-deserved attention recently, especially in the wake of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, a number of top actresses have established themselves as some of the highest-earners in Hollywood, according to Newsweek.
Mila Kunis ranks as the fifth-highest earning actress in Hollywood, raking in $15.5 million (£11.2 million) in 2017 due to her hit comedy Bad Moms and the seuqle Bad Moms 2. Comedian Melissa McCarthy also ranked as one of Hollywood’s top earning actresses last year, bringing in $18 million (£13 million) for her work in films like The Boss and Ghostbusters.
The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence placed third on the list with $24 million (£17.3 million) in earnings. Lawrence has been extra busy the past few years, appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse and Passengers in 2016 alone.
Film and TV veteran Jennifer Aniston also ranked as one of Hollywood’s top earning actresses, bringing in $25.5 million (£18.4 million) just last year. Aniston, however, narrowly missed out on being named as the highest-paid actress in Hollywood.
That honor goes to Emma Stone, who earned $26 million (£18.8 million) in 2017. The actress, who’s been honored with Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards and Golden Globe Awards over the course of her career, earned a huge payday thanks in large to the commercial success of La La Land and her Oscar for best actress for her role as Mia.
