Unilever's warning to tech giants: Drain the swamp or lose advertising

Unilever has threatened to remove advertising from Facebook, Twitter and Google if they fail to act against extremist, offensive and illegal content.

The Anglo-Dutch consumer group attacked tech companies for creating a “swamp” in which fake news and abusive and criminal material circulated.

Unilever owns brands including Marmite, Dove, Persil and PG Tips and is the world’s second-biggest spender on marketing. Keith Weed, its chief marketing officer, raised the company’s concerns at the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s annual leadership meeting in California yesterday.

“We cannot continue to prop up a digital supply chain — one that delivers over a quarter of our advertising to our consumers — which at times is little better than a swamp in terms of its transparency,” Mr Weed said, according to a speech…
